Where Champagne is produced:

Champagne can only be produced in the demarcated region of Champagne, located in France. This area comprises five departments, with the Marne representing the majority (66%), followed by the Aube (23%), the Aisne (10%), the Haute Marne and the Seine et Marne. The vineyard is divided into four macro-regions: the Côte des Bar, the Côte des Blancs-Sézannais, the Montagne di Reims and the Marne Valley. Each of these macro-regions has unique characteristics that influence the style and character of the Champagnes produced in them. The vineyard area of Champagne extends over an area of approximately 24,000 hectares.

The Climate and the Territory of Champagne: An Excellence Combination

Champagne, thanks to its unique climate and territory, is able to produce wines of extraordinary quality. The cold and continental climate favors a slow ripening of the grapes, preserving the acidity and developing delicate aromas. The territory, divided into various macro-regions, offers a variety of calcareous and clayey soils, ideal for vineyards. This combination of factors creates the optimal conditions for the cultivation of native grapes, such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, guaranteeing the production of Champagnes of great elegance and complexity.

How to identify the House of Champagne by observing the label:

A two-letter acronym indicates the work and type of production of each producer. (This acronym appears on the label in very small print)

CM: coopérative de manipulation; refers to producers' associations which are part of a cooperative, responsible for harvesting, winemaking and sale.

MA: marque d'acheteur; Champagne specially created for large-scale distribution.

ND: négociant-distributeur; refers to the entrepreneur who buys bottles ready for sale and markets them with its own brand.

NM: négociant-manipulant; in this case, the Champagne House buys the raw material (grapes) and assembles it to produce and sell the wine.

RC: récoltant- coopérateur; producers who deliver their grapes to a cooperative for winemaking; the finished product is then returned to each wine producer for marketing.

RM: récoltant-manipulant; they are winegrowers who produce their own wine from the raw material (grapes); it is high quality Champagne and limited production.
